What Is Profit and Loss?

Profit occurs when your selling price is higher than your product cost. A loss occurs when your product cost is higher than your selling price. If both amounts are equal, you break even.

How to Calculate Profit or Loss

Subtract the product cost from the selling price.

Profit or Loss = Selling Price − Product Cost

If the result is positive, you have a profit. If the result is negative, you have a loss.

How to Calculate Profit Margin

Profit margin shows profit or loss as a percentage of the selling price.

Profit Margin = (Profit or Loss ÷ Selling Price) × 100

Example: Profit

If you sell a product for $100 and the product costs $70, your profit is $30.

$100 − $70 = $30 Profit
Profit Margin = 30%

Example: Loss

If you sell a product for $50 but the product costs $70, you have a $20 loss.

$50 − $70 = −$20 Loss
Profit Margin = −40%
